A defense of satiric poetry

I had the pleasure of attending my daughter Angelica Pass’s thesis defense at the University of Victoria yesterday morning. She’d written on “Juvenal, Martial and the Augustans: An Analysis of the Production and Reception of Satiric Poetry in Flavian Rome”. I shouldn’t have been surprised by her knowledge and eloquence  yet as I watched her and listened to her respond to some very difficult and interesting questions about the nature of satire and patronage, I was impressed at how she has forged her own life almost without me noticing. Impressed, and very very proud.
