in the palaces of the Alhambra

I will never forget the alabaster pillars, the filagree, the delicate ceilings, views of the city, gardens filled with roses (a few blooming so early in the season), pomegranates, quince, cypress, hedges of flowering rosemary, myrtle, birds singing, crowds pushing their way in front of us when we paused by the fountains, tiny wall lizards, the warm pinky-red stone, long paths under strawberry trees (cousins to our arbutus), a trellis of oleander, the wide stone stairs leading up, or down, and everywhere the sound of water.

    1. We are in that quarter too, at the Carmen de la Victoria, just at the foot of Sacromonte. The gardens are gorgeous. In an hour or so we are meeting some students from yesterday’s seminar and the pleasure goes on..

    1. What’s so astonishing is that the water is everywhere — fountains, small canals, pools – and the hydraulic systems, designed more than a 1000 years ago, are so efficient. You don’t always see the water but you hear it and it’s so refreshing.
