Today I noticed the nestlings rising up in the nest as one parent or another approached with food. But only two open beaks…I kept watching and never counted three. So I just held the camera over the nest and this is what I saw.
The nest is so protected that I don’t think ravens or owls could get near it. I haven’t noticed any squirrels around lately. Is this an example of the avian equivalent of “failure to thrive” or nest death? For a woman who has perhaps made too much of the parallels between this family and her own, it’s a little sad to contemplate…
