in Brno

We arrived in Brno yesterday afternoon, flying across a frozen Europe. And it’s cold here, but bright – the sky blue and the view from our hotel wide and grand. Katka met us at the airport and brought us into the city, waiting for us while we dropped off our bags; then we went to the Green Cat for supper. I had a bowl of garlic soup, small crisp croutons floating in a rich broth, followed by potato dumplings stuffed with smoked meat in a puree of red cabbage. John had cabbage soup, followed by roast duck and the cabbage puree. We shared a bottle of Rulandske Modre, which I think is the Moravian Pinot Noir – a lovely wine with this food. We’re practising our handful of Czech phrases, the pleases, the thank-yous, and what delicious food!

Later this morning, we’re going to the Brno reservoir to walk and explore. Thank goodness for a suitcase stuffed with warm sweaters and two pairs of gloves.
